Web Filtering for Schools – The Requirement for Differentiated Filtering

This paper discusses some general requirements for a web-filtering system for academies and schools. It looks at, in particular, the need for differentiated filtering within the school environment because of the range of "audiences" to be effectively and appropriately filtered. This contrasts with a commercial environment where all the internet users are adults: this makes filtering much simpler as child safety and content "appropriateness" issues do not need to be addressed. Google Images and Protex Filtering

This paper describes how Protex treats Google's image searches. Not only does it enforce the "safe-search" option that Google provides but also does additional filtering on the image thumbnails, content checks the results page and can block particular searches from taking place at all.
